We’re pleased to tell you every Des Moines Public Schools elementary student will now have access to breakfast at no cost to the students or their families. This expansion means almost every school in the district offers at least one no-cost meal option during the day. No more pulling crumpled paper flyers from your student’s backpack! Opportunities in the community will now be available online, instead of jumbled up with homework and artwork. Greenwood will be participating in Breakfast in the Classroom this upcoming school year. Students will have the option to grab breakfast on their way to their classroom FREE OF CHARGE to parents. Principal Safina has been with Des Moines Public Schools for more than a decade, and longtime families may remember her — she used to be on staff at Greenwood! Principal Safina is looking forward to welcoming all of us back when school starts later this month!

In late March five 8th graders at Callanan Middle School – Zoe Zmolek, Claire Bissmeyer, Natalie Bennett and Grace & Ella Sundstrom – launched a project to provide free books for summer reading to all students at their elementary alma mater: Greenwood. United Way and Half Price Books came aboard as sponsors, and today the girls delivered nearly 900 book for every student at their old school. Click the headline to read and see more.

Greenwood Elementary School’s coding club demonstrated the value of computer science during a press conference today with Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and Iowa Department of Education Director Ryan Wise, who spoke about legislation recently signed to encourage computer science education. The star of the press conference, however, was Greenwood’s coding club, a group of more than 75 students who meet after school to work on technology projects. Our annual Fall Breakfast Buddies and Book Fair event is rapidly approaching.  Please join us for breakfast on November 22 for pancakes provided by Chriss Cakes.  The cost is $5 per person and the money is due on November 18th.  The Book Fair will run November 18th-22nd.

It’s National School Lunch Week, and to mark the occasion Greenwood hosted more than 150 parents for lunch. The menu included chili with “homegrown” black beans; cupcakes made with aronia berries; corn muffins and cherry tomatoes; and zucchini from the Wallace Center. Iowa icon Henry A. Wallace, who once lived down the street from Greenwood, started the school lunch program when he was Secretary of Agriculture. Click the headline to read and see more.
