Twice monthly visits to Wesley Acres brings friends of different generations together. Sometimes the group plays bingo. The school bell times at Greenwood will change with the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. Our new start time is 7:30 AM and we will dismiss at 2:25 PM, with a 75 minute early dismissal on Wednesdays. We want to recognize our students for being RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, and CARING! Our student advisory team sponsored our first school spirit event this year, Mismatch Day. Students were encouraged to wear mismatched clothing. They could wear stripes and spots or animal print with floral print. They could even just wear two different socks. It was game day and members of the Roosevelt football team, cheerleaders, and Coach Link stopped by Greenwood. The student athletes answered questions, read with students, and participated in classroom activities. The Greenwood students were excited to see the players and cheerleaders in uniform! Principal Safina has been with Des Moines Public Schools for more than a decade, and longtime families may remember her — she used to be on staff at Greenwood! Principal Safina is looking forward to welcoming all of us back when school starts later this month!
In late March five 8th graders at Callanan Middle School – Zoe Zmolek, Claire Bissmeyer, Natalie Bennett and Grace & Ella Sundstrom – launched a project to provide free books for summer reading to all students at their elementary alma mater: Greenwood. United Way and Half Price Books came aboard as sponsors, and today the girls delivered nearly 900 book for every student at their old school. Click the headline to read and see more.
